Throughout 1968-1971, an exhibition of 70 frescoes toured major art venues in the United States, the UK and Europe. The exhibition offered to many a once in a lifetime opportunity to see artworks by the leading painters of the Florentine Renaissance that were never designed to move – those once part of the walls of churches, chapels and palaces. What raised the stakes for this bold initiative, however, was the flood of Florence in 1966 which devastated the city and so much of its globally significant cultural heritage. Come along to learn about this ground-breaking exhibition, the cultural politics and the curatorial challenges.
