David Hartley studied modern languages in London, before arriving in Aberdeen in 1973. He taught for thirty years in the Department of French at the University, his specialisms being 16th and 17th-century literature and language teaching. He wrote books and articles on French Renaissance poets and their relations with the historical figures of the time, including Mary, Queen of Scots.
