Throughout Italian history, youth has symbolised social, cultural, and political change during pivotal moments such as the Renaissance, the Risorgimento, Fascism, and the events of 1968. This lecture will explore how youth, both as an ideal and as a generational subject, has shaped Italian culture. From Botticelli’s iconic paintings and Lorenzo De’ Medici’s poetry to the Giovine Italia manifesto, from Fascism’s idolisation and regulation of youth to young people’s self-determination in the 1960s, this talk will examine the changing significance of youth in Italian culture.

Cecilia Brioni is Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Aberdeen. Her research explores the history of representations of Italian youth in the 20th and 21st centuries in a variety of popular media, including literature, film, television, print media and social media.
