In the wake of the recent exhibition on Sassetta in the Museum of San Pietro all’Orto in Massa Marittima (15 March-15 September 2024), and in light of the forthcoming itinerant exhibition on Sienese art, Siena: The Rise of Painting, 1300-1350, that will be held at The Met Museum in New York (13 October 2024-26 January 20024) and at The National Gallery of London (8 March-22 June 2025), we will discuss some key paintings from Medieval and Renaissance Siena. From Duccio di Boninsegna’s Maestà (1308-1311) in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo of Siena, to Vecchietta’s triptych with the Madonna of the Humility at the Aberdeen Art Gallery (c. 1430-40), we will look in depth at ten masterpieces produced in the Tuscan city during its golden age and explore how these images reflect Siena’s rich history and cultural identity.
