Maria de’Medici married the French King Henri IV, bore him a son (the future Louis XIII), and was widowed at Henri’s assassination in 1610. Her period as Regent was a troubled one, being imprisoned by her own son when he insisted on making his own decisions, and after her escape, falling foul of Cardinal Richelieu. Her story is forms a remarkable parallel that of an earlier member of the Medici dynasty, Catherine, who likewise married a French King (Henri II), was widowed, and struggled to assert herself as Regent to her children.
