As well as puzzling over “whodunnit?”, lovers of detective fiction can re-live the adventures of Morse and Lewis among the Dreaming Spires of Colin Dexter’s Oxford, or follow Inspector John Rebus amid the Georgian elegance, the Old Town closes and the sink estates of Ian Rankin’s Edinburgh, or trace the progress of Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti among the Calli, Campielli e Canali of Venice.

But fans of Montalbano face a more complicated quest.  It is something of an open secret that Montalbano in print, and Montalbano on screen inhabit two quite different versions of Sicily.  Identifying the locations used in print and screen versions proves complicated, confusing and frustrating – but also sometimes surprising and rewarding.
