Giacomo Leopardi is regarded as one of Italy’s most important 19th-century intellectuals. Yet, he remains comparatively lesser known among international audiences than his domestic stature might suggest. Is it a matter of translation? Focussing on a selection of poetic renditions of the Canti, the author’s major verse composition, this talk discusses how Leopardi’s poetry was represented abroad. It will consider how his thought and expression have been shaped by translators’ subjective interpretations as well as prevailing socio-cultural and historical conditions.
